WATERCOLOR #4

ASBURY HIDES IN A SWAMP UNTIL SUNSET

The threat became a tragic fact. On April 2, 1778, Judge White was arrested and imprisoned. Among the tearful witnesses was his eight year old son, Samuel White, who later became a Senator. Asbury departed; and so as not to betray his friends, hid in swamps, or houses safe from intrusion (one was Governor Rodney's!). During this period of lonely travel he never ceased to preach. Though the Judge's persecution continued for a year, the family sheltered Asbury again from November 1778 until April 1779.
